How does the new Google Maps pricing model announced on 1st May 2018 work?

A new pricing model has been announced for the Google Maps Platform. The new model provides access to the same familiar Google Maps APIs, with a model where you only pay for what you use, regardless of the use case. The good news is that the first $200 will be free for all customers, making the platform more accessible to trial.

Full pricing information can be found here. The new pricing will come into effect on September 1st for existing Maps Premium Maps Customers and June 11th for new customers.

Will the new Google Maps pricing model affect my Google Maps Commercial Plan?

The changes will impact your Google Maps Commercial Plan at the time of your next renewal if this is after 1st September 2018.

Before the renewal date, we will contact you and go through what the changes mean for your use case and how to transition smoothly with as little impact as possible.

Up until the next renewal, there will be no change and your implementation will not be impacted in any way. If you are already an asset tracking customer, the changes will not affect you at all and your plan will continue as usual at the next renewal.

What are the new industry solutions available in the Google Maps Platform?

New industry solutions are being added to complement and enhance the Google Maps Platform. The solutions are currently in very early development and release phases. The three new solutions announced to date are Ridesharing, Gaming and Asset tracking.

Ridesharing integrates Google Maps directly into your ridesharing app to decrease navigation friction for your drivers and improve wait times for your customers.

Gaming creates immersive, real-world games with millions of customisable 3D structures, up-to-date global data, and seamless integration with Unity.

Asset tracking improves business efficiencies by locating vehicles and assets in real time, visualising where assets have travelled, and routing vehicles with complex trips. For existing asset tracking customers, nothing changes and you will be automatically moved to this solution.
