How to transform frontline services in the public sector

Research conducted independently by iGov Survey has revealed that 82% of those holding senior positions within the public sector see austerity measures as the catalyst for the transformation of frontline services. As part of the Government's 'digital by default' approach, there is a growing pressure on services to deliver more for less, and this focus is being recognised by staff, with 83% reporting it as the most important reason behind change. In addition, over half view digital technology as the key to this transformation.

Digital by default

The survey also examined obstructions to transformation, revealing that people are seen as the greatest barrier to improvements, with very few (just 4.2%) viewing their CIO and CTO as the drivers of transformation.

"There is no doubt the digital transformation spearheaded by the Government Digital Service is starting to impact the delivery of public sector services, making them simpler, clearer and more accessible" commented Duncan Farley, Head of Business Transformation at Ancoris. "The low number of people recognising the role of the CIO and CTO in fostering change is worrying though. Organisations need to enable their IT teams to focus more on the people and process aspect of change in order to fully benefit from technology."

Survey findings

The survey also revealed:

  • 72% believe the use of cloud technology could benefit their organisation
  • Mobile was most often reported (87%) as the new technology being adopted within organisations' IT strategies.
  • Almost two-thirds plan to introduce both cloud and collaboration technologies as part of their IT strategy, but only 36% are including big data.

David McLeman, CEO of Ancoris commented: "It is refreshing to see that over three quarters of respondents view austerity as a catalyst for change. Achieving more with less is an ongoing challenge for the public sector, but one that is being supported by initiatives such as G-Cloud. Introducing transformative cloud technology like Google Workspace enables the introduction of social, collaboration and mobile technology throughout an organisation from top to bottom, fostering an environment that will deliver better, faster services at a lower cost."
